To incentivize participation in this grassroots mobilization, the Advocates for Internal Medicine Network (ACP grassroots network) is challenging members to see which states will have the highest engagement. Advocates can score points for their states by choosing to take one or more advocacy actions identified in the campaign.

The 鶹ֱapp, Indiana Opposes Efforts to Ban Gender-Affirming Care
(March 2023) Statement Attributable to Bradley M. Sutter, MD, FACP, Governor, Indiana Chapter; Katherine Palmisano, MD, FACP, Chair, Health & Public Policy Committee, Indiana Chapter.
Indiana Senate Bill 480 seeks to prohibit physicians from providing gender-affirming and transgender care to minors. The 鶹ֱapp Indiana Chapter opposes this bill as well as Indiana House Bill 1118, House Bill 1220, House Bill 1231, House Bill 1525, and House Bill 1589 which all seek similar. The ACP Indiana Chapter, representing 1775 internal medicine physicians and medical students in the state of Indiana, affirms the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals to receive gender-affirming and transgender health care. Our chapter firmly supports physicians who provide this necessary care and opposes efforts to criminalize these services.
A growing number of states are banning gender-affirming health care and pursuing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, contrary to ACP policy, which urges non-discrimination in health care. ACP opposes these restrictions on health care for transgender individuals, who already may face extreme barriers to accessing care, and strongly objects to any unnecessary government interference with any health care services.
Laws like the ones currently under consideration in Indiana drive stigma and endanger the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ youth. According to the Trevor Project’s 2021 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, 94 percent of LGBTQ+ youth reported that recent politics have negatively impacted their mental health.
ACP has decried discriminatory policies against LGBTQ+ people because of the harm they cause. In particular, ACP has objected to the interference with the physician-patient relationship and penalization of evidence-based care. ACP believes that physicians and other health care professionals should not fear criminal punishment for providing the medical standard of care, nor should the government attempt to force disclosure of patient information related to gender-affirming care. ACP policy also calls for coverage of comprehensive transgender health care in private and public insurance plans. In addition to speaking out against these harmful laws, ACP has joined amicus briefs in legal challenges discriminating against transgender people.
ACP Indiana will continue to support legal and legislative efforts protecting against these medically unsound and dangerous restrictions.
