Internal Medicine Interest Group of the Month: University of Virginia School of Medicine
The University of Virginia School of Medicine (UVA) has a strong tradition of sending 20% to 25% of its graduates each year into highly regarded internal medicine residency programs. Club MED, the internal medicine interest group, provides early exposure to internal medicine during the preclerkship curriculum and continues educating in the clinical years as well. We began this year by enrolling over 300 students as Members of the ACP. For the past two years, our leadership comprised of one fourth-year and two second-year students. This has increased interclass collaboration and maintained continuity of programming throughout the academic year.
MoreLeadership Opportunities Available: ACP Council of Student Members Call for Nominations
The Council of Student Members (CSM) is currently recruiting five new representatives for terms beginning in April 2013. The CSM is responsible for planning programs for the annual meeting, promoting internal medicine as a career, and increasing the value of ACP membership to medical students. For more information, please visit: www.acponline.org/medical_students/resources/csm_call_noms_2013-14.pdf. Deadline to apply is January 4, 2013.
Advocacy Update: Speak up for Internal Medicine: Enroll in AIMn
With the 113th Congress beginning in January, ACP's continued success on Capitol Hill greatly depends upon year-round grassroots support from the College's more than 8,000 participants in the Advocates for Internal Medicine Network (AIMn).
MoreWinning Abstracts from the 2012 Medical Student Abstract Competition: Molecular Cardiac Surgery with Retrograde Delivery (Mcard) in the Treatment of Heart Failure
Vector mediated cardiac gene therapy is a translatable platform for treating many cardiovascular diseases. However, in spite of development of adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector serotypes with significant trophism for the heart, these results have not yet been confirmed using an intravenous delivery route in small or large animals in situ.
MoreSubspecialty Careers: Interventional Cardiology
From the Latin word intervenire, "to come between," Interventional Cardiology is the branch of Cardiology responsible for catheter-based interventions in the management of ischemic heart disease, congenital heart disease, and acquired valvular disease.
MoreIn the Clinic: Heart Failure
Approximately 5 million persons in the United States have heart failure, and according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, the number is increasing. Heart failure is the most frequent cause of hospitalization in U.S. patients older than 65 years and leads to about 300 000 deaths per year (1). Heart failure is a major problem in the rest of the world as well, but few accurate data are available
In the Clinic is a monthly feature in Annals of Internal Medicine that focuses on practical management of patients with common clinical conditions. It offers evidence-based answers to frequently asked questions about screening, prevention, diagnosis, therapy, and patient education and provides physicians with tools to improve the quality of care. Many internal medicine clerkship directors recommend this series of articles for students on the internal medicine ambulatory rotation.
