When Patients Wander
(from the February 2018 ACP Hospitalist)
One very cold February morning in Iowa, a young man was admitted to the ED of a community hospital for a behavioral health evaluation. After an hour or so, he asked to leave, but before he could be discharged, he walked outside, breaking into a run and disappearing into the distance when a security guard tried to detain him.
ACP Internist provides news and information for internists about the practice of medicine and reports on the policies, products, and activities of ACP.
My Kind of Medicine: Real Lives of Practicing Internists
Spotlight: Banu Symington, MD, MACP
Growing up in Philadelphia, Dr. Banu Symington never envisioned a career in medicine. Instead, she wanted to be an archeologist. That changed when she was a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania and had dated a young man who was applying to medical school.
Medical Student Perspective
The Material Exams Cannot Teach
I was accepted to medical school almost exactly one year ago. While I often can't remember what I ate for breakfast, I can still vividly picture that weekend. It was April 30, the day in which students who hold multiple offers must narrow their options to only one acceptance.

Is This What Depression Looks Like?
In , the author/artist imagines what depression looks like inside himself and wonders, “Is this the black dog of depression I've read about?â€

Oropharyngeal Dysphagia: Rare Presenting Symptom of Statin-induced HMG CoA Reductase Necrotizing Autoimmune Myopathy
Necrotizing Autoimmune Myopathy (NAM) associated with 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A Reductase (HMGCR) antibodies has been described in statin-induced and statin-naive patients. Proximal muscle weakness is the presenting symptom in HMGCR NAM.

Subspecialty Careers
Infectious Disease
Infectious disease medicine is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on diagnosing and managing infections. Although most common infections are treated by general internists and other specialty physicians, internists practicing infectious disease medicine are frequently called upon to help diagnose unknown infections and assist in managing difficult, unusual, or complicated infections.
Cellulitis and soft tissue infections are a diverse group of diseases that range from uncomplicated cellulitis to necrotizing fasciitis. Management of predisposing conditions is the primary means of prevention.

Earn while you learn! The Â鶹ֱ²¥app is recruiting students to act as ultrasound models at Internal Medicine Meeting 2018 to be held April 17 – 21, 2018 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA.
Ultrasound models are needed for:
- The Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Internists and Hospitalists pre-course on Tuesday, April 17 and Wednesday, April 18. There are two sessions available on each day: 7:30 am – 11:45 am and 12:45 pm – 5:00 p.m. Students can sign-up for one session or all four sessions and will receive a stipend of $50 per session.
- Ultrasound-guided activities in the Herbert S. Waxman Clinical Skills Center, Thursday, April 19 through Saturday April 21. Students who participate in the Waxman Center will receive a stipend of $15 per hour.
These are noninvasive workshops, and students will be used to demonstrate ultrasound technique and imaging of normal anatomy.
This is a great learning opportunity for medical students! David Lee, a 4th year medical student at Western Michigan University School of Medicine who has previously served as an ultrasound model, describes this opportunity:
Serve as an ultrasound model because you see a potential for invaluable learning, not because you see a potential monetary reward for your time. The lessons provided give medical students unprecedented exposure to techniques and tools inseparable from effective and efficient patient care. [You will] only look better in your programs and your profession if you have taken the initiative to expose yourself to the very techniques we recommend for our patients and can better empathize with patients and the physical and emotional burdens they may be experiencing when they come in for something necessitating these interventions.
If you live in the New Orleans area or are planning to attend Internal Medicine Meeting 2018 and would like to participate, please to see available time slots and to register.
Please share this announcement with your classmates.
