PHILADELPHIA March 15, 2024 -- The 2024 Main Residency Match revealed that internal medicine remains the largest training specialty, offering more than one-quarter (26 percent) of all PGY-1 positions in the Match. Internal medicine programs offered a record high 10,261 categorical positions, the first time over 10,000 positions were offered. However, primary care internal medicine Match positions declined to 420 offered positions, the smallest offering in the past 5 years. Of the categorical positions, 9,767 (95.2 percent) were filled, with 5,378 (55.1 percent) matched by U.S. medical school seniors. Of the primary care internal medicine positions, 416 (99.0 percent) were filled, 284 (67.6 percent) by U.S. medical school seniors.
鈥淭he continual growth in number of offered and matched categorical internal medicine positions reflects national recognition for the importance of internal medicine as a cornerstone of comprehensive health care,鈥 said Davoren Chick, MD, FACP, ACP chief learning officer. 鈥淚nternal medicine physicians are experts in clinical complexity who partner with patients through their healthcare journey. We specialize in diagnostic evaluations, acute problem management, preventive care, critical care, and long-term care for complex conditions. Internal medicine physicians optimize patient care, advance knowledge through research, and serve as leaders in hospitals and ambulatory settings across the U.S.鈥
鈥淭he decline in offered and matched primary care positions is of concern given forcasted nationwide shortages of primary care physicians,鈥 she added. 鈥淎CP supports the adoption of a national workforce policy that would help to ensure that the number and mix of physician specialties meets the health care needs of our population, including internal medicine specialists in primary and comprehensive care of adults and adolescents. We also support adequate payments for primary care services and healthcare delivery system reforms to encourage an increase in the supply of internal medicine physicians and other primary care physicians.鈥
