2024 ACP Leadership Day

Leadership Day is an annual ACP advocacy meeting in Washington, DC. It's an election year so there isn't necessarily big policy items on the agenda but effective advocacy many times is about incremental change over time - think erosion rather than a tornado.

This year, ACP identified three asks for members to take as they met with their congressional delegations.

  1. Co-sponsor and pass H.R.2630/S. 652, the Safe Step Act of 2023, a bipartisan bill that would require group health plans to provide an exception process for any medication step therapy protocol to help ensure that patients can safely and efficiently access treatment.
  2. Co-sponsor and pass H.R. 2389/S. 1302, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023, which would gradually raise the number of Medicare-supported GME positions by 2,000 per year for seven years.
  3. Cosponsor and pass H.R. 6545, the Physician Fee Schedule Update and Improvements Act, that would raise the threshold for implementing budget neutral payment cuts from $20 million to $53 million and would provide an increased update to the threshold every five years afterwards based on the MEI.

We are grateful that one of our members, Dr. Siddharth Singhal, represented North Dakota at Leadership Day.

From Dr. Singhal:

I had the privilege of participating in the ACP leadership meeting in Washington DC in May 2024. As the only participant from North Dakota, I was able to contribute towards the ACP goal of active participation from all 50 states. I got to interact with highly accomplished physician peers from several states. I was able to meet with some wellbeing champions & ACP governors who I merely knew via virtual meetings till now.

We learned a great deal about advocacy and the mechanics of policy changes. Light rains made the trip to the Capitol even more pleasant. It was an honor to visit the offices of Sen. Cramer, Sen. Hoeven as well as Rep. Armstrong and engage in insightful conversations with their staff. The 3 main issues that were raised as per guidelines from ACP:

It was a great experience overall and I'm grateful to ND Chapter & ACP governor Josh Ranum for encouraging this opportunity.

Thanks,

Siddharth Singhal MD FACP FHM

Thank you, Dr. Singhal!!

Call for Spring 2025 Resolutions

Are you concerned about a practice or clinical issue or have an idea you would like to suggest? If so, you might consider submitting a resolution to your Governor or chapter council.

Initiating a resolution provides ACP members an opportunity to focus attention at the ACP national level on a particular issue or topic that concerns them. Participating in the Board of Governors resolutions process provides the ACP grassroots member a voice and allows you to shape College policy that impacts the practice of internal medicine.

Not sure how to begin drafting a resolution? Researching the College's position on an issue can give you a start. The ACP Board of Governors Resolutions Guide for ACP Members is available to download and will help, too. The Guide was created to provide members a short overview of the resolutions process essentials and highlights critical ACP online resources you must use.

Once drafted, members must submit resolutions to their Governor and/or chapter council. Chapter council approval is required to move resolutions forward to ACP national. Although not official ACP policy, a resolution becomes property of the chapter once the chapter council approves forwarding it to national. If effecting change interests you, the deadline for submitting new resolutions to be heard at the Spring 2025 Board of Governors Meeting is September 27, 2024.

Share your good idea with us. Draft a resolution.
