Governor's Message
For months and months we have all been wondering if the COVID pandemic will end, or if we are all living in the 鈥渘ew abnormal.鈥 I think we're still stuck in the new abnormal, but the good news is we are seeing a reboot of many of the events and activities from before the pandemic.
I am excited to participate in these in-person events over the next few months, and hope you are as well. I look forward to seeing you for real 鈥 not virtually 鈥 this spring!
Lacy Hobgood

Annual Scientific Meeting
First, we look forward to our in-person annual meeting at the Grandover in Greensboro on Friday March 3 鈥 Saturday March 4 2023. The overall theme for the meeting is Mental Health and Wellness. Many of the faculty are from ECU's Internal Medicine-Psychiatry program, and they hope to provide you with a range of strategies to manage psychiatric conditions commonly faced by practicing Internal Medicine Physicians. Both CME and MOC are available for this year's meeting.
Resident Poster Session
We received more than 150 resident physician posters, and look forward to displaying the best of the best Friday evening. We need a few more physicians to serve as volunteer judges at the meeting. If you are interested in volunteering as a judge, please contact me at Hobgoodl@ecu.edu or meeting staff at meberle@ncmedsoc.org
Keynote Speaker
Our keynote speaker is Dr. David Michael, Chief Medical Informatics Officer at ECU Health and Medical Director of ECU Health's Lifestyle Medicine Clinic. Their services include medical nutrition therapy, joint preservation, diabetes prevention and management, and exercise as medicine. Knowing that there are limits to what we as Internal Medicine Physicians can control with pharmacotherapy, I look forward to hearing what he has to share regarding lifestyle intervention.
Story Slam
We also are excited to have another Story Slam. Speakers have 5 minutes to tell their story about ANYTHING related to their professional lives or identity. We all have been through the crucible the last 3 years and have countless stories to share. If you are interested in sharing your story, please contact meberle@ncmedsoc.org Examples of past story slam entries published by Annals of Internal Medicine can be seen here
Other returning highlights include the Chief Resident presentations from our Internal Medicine residency programs from across the state, and the Doctor's Dilemma competition. Last year's team from NC won the competition at IM 2022 in Chicago, bringing home the Osler Cup. We look forward to this year's competition, and look forward to cheering NC's team in San Diego Thursday April 27 鈥 Saturday April 29.
Internal Medicine Meeting
Speaking of the national meeting, the NC Chapter reception will be Friday, April 28. Registration for the national meeting is open online at
We also will be returning to in-person advocacy, both at the state and the national level. The NC Medical Society has a new full time legislative coordinator, Hannah Rice, who is happy to arrange in-person meetings with our legislators in Raleigh. I plan to attend at least one 鈥淲hite Coat Wednesday鈥 session in May. The Health Committee usually meets on Wednesday, but you certainly can meet with the legislators in Raleigh Tuesday-Thursday, or in the home district offices whenever convenient for you
Leadership Day
We also will send a delegation to ACP Leadership Day in Washington DC Tuesday May 23 鈥 Wednesday May 24. Tuesday is spent learning what issues are important and how to talk to elected representatives and their staff, and Wednesday is spent on Capitol Hill. We will have meetings with both Senators and all of our US Representatives. We have funding support for up to five resident physicians and medical students to participate. You can learn more about Leadership Day at /advocacy/advocacy-in-action/leadership-day and registration should be open in a few months.
