Vidya Sundareshan, MD, MPH, FACP, ACP Governor, Illinois Southern

Warm Greetings!

Hope you are enjoying the sunshine and extra hours of daytime. It was wonderful to see a great representation of Illinois South members at IMM2024. Each year I am amazed at the thoughtfulness with which the topics are chosen. The scientific content was excellent with an enlightening keynote session by Dr. Eric Topol on the positive impacts of artificial intelligence on the future of medicine, as well as a brilliant plenary session led by Dr. Christine Lane, the editor in chief of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

A huge shoutout to our very own IL- South leaders, Dr. Vidhya Prakash and Dr. Susan Hingle, for a successful panel discussion at the women in medicine luncheon. There was standing room only for this event! The ACP townhall with the governance had insightful discussions after both the incoming and outgoing presidents addressed the members. Dr. Jokela, another prominent national leader from IL-South, continues to serve on ACP governance as treasurer.

Please join me in congratulating our immediate past governor, Dr. Jim Graumlich, on being recognized as Master of ACP. We also had two members, Lianghe Gao, MD FACP and Ghanshyambhai T Savani, MD FACP, who were recognized as Fellows of the ACP. Congratulations to Dr. MJ Yadav who will serve as the next governor for Illinois South starting May 2025.

Leadership Day 2024 was very successful with great representation from both IL-S and IL-N. We had a collaborative POCUS event with the Missouri chapter, that I hope some of our members were able to attend. Next year, a similar event is being planned for IL-N and IL-S as we have some exceptional POCUS teachers in both regions. We are proud of Dr. Phan's hard work and leadership on the national committee for POCUS.

I also want to take this time to thank all the IL-S chapter council members for their time, expertise and guidance last year. We had a productive year having co-sponsored multiple resolutions, a very successful resident student day in Peoria, supporting the IMG reception with networking opportunities at IMM23 and IMM24, creating and organizing an IMG committee, IM Speaks series, and more. Thank you Dr. Flack, Dr. Hingle, Dr. Jokela, Dr. Graumlich, Dr. Aiyer, Dr. Jennings,Dr. Hlafka, Dr. Lynch, Dr. Yadav, Dr. Ahmad, Dr. Pujar and Michael Brown!

The Illinois Chapter meeting and the ILS Resident and Student Competitions will be held on October 4th in Champaign this year. Dr. Sharjeel Ahmad has chaired the education committee to come up with an excellent program. We hope to see many of you there!

After our strategic planning meeting led by Dr. Susan Hingle last year, two priorities emerged. This year, our focus will be on Early Career Physicians and Rural Physicians. I welcome IL-S members to participate in our various committees, as well as share how you would like to be engaged in the chapter activities. Thank you for all that you do daily for your patients, learners, and the community.

-Vidya
